Who has ever heard of a band that makes a strong return? Wait, who has heard of the band Downtown New York? Not a lot of people. The band formed in 1986 by Brian Lee O'Malley, the band's rhythmist and singer. Downtown New York has not been very popular due to the new music eras constantly shoving people off the scene. "We just entered at the wrong time I'd say"" says O'Malley. They sure did. Everyone was focused on older and more popular bands such as Metallica and Megadeth. Does that mean they were driven into the ground? Not at all. They opened up for Michael Schenker in 1989 at the New Years party. Thousands had shown up for the gig and were ecstastic when Downtown New York finished playing. "It's like we stole the show before it even began." says Ellis Burgen, the lead guitarist.
But while it was a good century, the band had lost a special someone along the way. Their old bassist, Glen Kossington, had quit the band after acquiring a life consuming drug addiction. They were never quite the same after the loss and started picking up bassists from the street. None ever compared to Kossington's skill. But they found a splendid replacement during this century. Before recording the new album "The World Awaits", the band picked up Bob Goring for a show. He was surprisingly talented and nailed the part. "I have been a fan of Downtown New York since I heard about them from the my uncle." Goring says. O'Malley agreed to officialize Goring as the band's new bassist. "It's a great experience, Bob is great." Burgen comments. "He adds a soothing tone to our new songs."
They still have a few blunders on stage. At one time, drummer Rogen Barsteed had a little mishap. "I lost the grip of my drumstick and it flipped in mid-air" says Barsteed. "I managed to make it look intentional though." The World Awaits is out now, so get it while you can!
